How transparency helps in the workplace

All successful communities are based on teamwork. Look at how, in the animal kingdom, bees work in harmony to create a successful colony, ants do likewise, and apes spend time grooming each other and getting to know their place in the hierarchy in which they live.

Equally, people working together, all pulling their weight, really get things done, and this is true in the workplace above all else. Put together a team of people with complementary skills, and companies can make great strides in their field.

But probe a little deeper into a team, looking at the individuals who make it up, and it’s possible that some team members are secretly over-inflating their contribution, or even harbouring resentment that others don’t appear to be doing their fair share.

It’s human nature to attribute more significance to our own contribution. We love our team, we love the results, but (if we are being honest) many of us privately think ours was the most important part.

This type of attitude can ultimately bring discord among a team, and lead to its downfall.

What we strive for here at 24-7 Staffing, and what we think makes our teamwork successful, is that each individual, while feeling proud of his or her own contribution, knows exactly what each other person has also brought to the table.

How do we do this? The answer is transparency, which we achieve through communication. If each person knows what the others are doing then it minimises overestimation of their own contribution and improves the sense of common purpose and camaraderie.

As the Dalai Lama said: “A lack of transparency results in distrust and a deep sense of insecurity.”

Steps towards achieving transparency

Here are some measures we have put in place at 24-7 Staffing:

  • We’ve introduced a weekly ‘company highlights’ email, to share figures across the business so everyone can see who is contributing what to the pot
  • Our company highlights email is a chance to praise individuals for their hard work, such as bringing in a new client, filling a significant vacancy, or going above and beyond (for example, it’s not uncommon for our team members to drop candidates into work if they have travel problems)
  • One of our Five Key Areas of Service is ‘being crystal clear’, and that goes for how we communicate with and among our team, as well as our clients and candidates.
