CV writing can seem very overwhelming, but once you realise it's outlining your skills and qualities, it's really simple.
Tips for CV writing
- Keep the length of your CV short and no more than 2 sides of A4. This will help with keeping all the information relevant.
- Check grammar and spelling. Always get someone else to double check your CV as they may be able to spot something you've missed.
- Use bullet points to emphasise lists and only include the most relevant experience to the job you're applying for.
- Make sure all the information is accurate. Check dates of your employment history and ensure contact information is correct.
- Showcase your education, qualifications and experience as this is what will make you stand out from the rest of the applicants.
- Write a short cover letter to accompany your CV. This should explain why you are applying for the role. This gives you an opportunity to outline skills relevant for the role, disclose gaps in your job history or any other information you feel the employer should know before considering your application.
- Include a personal statement about yourself. This gives future employers an idea about the type of person you are. Include hobbies and interests. Don't spend a lot of time on this section.
- Be honest!
Things to NOT include
- Don't use the same CV for every job application. You should tailor your CV to every role you apply for.
- Don't be too repetitive. It's great to mention your proudest achievements twice to outline them but don't keep repeating them throughout your CV.
- Don't use hard to read or 'fancy' fonts. This will make it hard for an employer to read/understand your CV.
- Don't focus on negative experiences. You should always focus on the positives.
- Don't leave unexplained gaps in your work history.
